A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME:
My name is Oliver Hartley. I am 17 years old and like Nic, Josh, Dillon, and Daniel, am in Grade 11 at SACS. The past 11 years at SACS has taught me some wonderful life lessons, the most important being: doing good is sometimes more important than doing well. I am an avid Waterpolo player and live in Hout Bay with my parents and older brother, Ben.
Growing up, my parents made sure that I was conscious of the fact that the vast majority of my fellow South Africans have not had the same opportunities and privileges I have. A short while from where I live, is the informal settlement, Imizamo Yethu. The very visible socio-economic divide between Hout Bay and Imizamo Yethu - even though they are right next door to each other - is something I have always been conscious of, and which has always saddened me
I believe that we owe it to the future generations of this country to give them all of the educational opportunities that we can. They will all have an incredibly positive impact on society and change our country for the better, so the very least that we can do is give them a little help along the way. That's why I am so happy to be part of the team for this year because it is a real chance to give back. These kids are our future, and it's up to us how bright that future will be.
“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know when it'll be too late.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
